Clinical services and outreach for the Division of Developmental Medicine are provided at the Center for Child Development.

Clinical Services
The clinics of the Center for Child Development provide:
  • developmental screening
  • medical evaluation and treatment
  • psychological assessment and intervention

We provide care for individuals with a wide variety of developmental concerns including:

  • Autism
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Cognitive impairment and intellectual disability (mental retardation)
  • Developmental delay
  • ADHD and other behavioral problems

The Center offers specialized clinics for:

  • Autism
  • Down syndrome
  • Fragile X
  • Neurogenetics (genetics of developmental disabilities)
  • STEP (Spasticity Treatment, Evaluation, and Planning)

Behavior training for families of children with behavior concerns is available in clinic and in homes through the Junior League-Vanderbilt Center for Parenting Young Children.

All of our specialists work with families to identify helpful resources in the community and the school system.

Our clinical services are provided by a diverse team of experts including developmental and behavioral pediatricians, general pediatricians, nurse practitioners, psychologists, educational consultants, research assistants, social workers, and support staff.

Outreach
We provide a variety of outreach programs to individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities and their families.
 
TREDS Deafblind Project
The Tennessee Technical Assistance and Resources for Enhancing Deafblind Supports provides assistance and support to any child who has both hearing and vision impairment.

Junior League – Vanderbilt Center for Parenting Young Children
The Parenting Center provides consultation and support to families and teachers for children with challenging behaviors.

Family Workshops
Our workshops provide education, resource identification, and networking opportunities to families with young children who have recently been diagnosed with a developmental disability.

Social Skills Classes
These classes are offered to adolescents with impaired social skills. 

Research
We are currently participating in several clinical research studies that will help us improve the lives of children with disabilities and their families. Projects include:

  • Autism Treatment Network provides comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, care and counseling for autism spectrum disorders.
  • Sleep impairment in children with autism spectrum disorders
  • Cognitive impact of urea cycle defects
  • Parent – Child Interaction
  • Therapy for children with attachment disorders
  • Medication intervention for individuals with Fragile X
  • Psychological outcomes of children with delirium
  • Development and implementation of a State of Tennessee early intervention database  

Education for Healthcare Professionals
We provide developmental disabilities education to individuals from a variety of disciplines, including medicine, nursing, psychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech and language therapy.  Our clinics provide training for the Vanderbilt MIND Training Program (Mid-Tennessee Interdisciplinary Instruction in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities), a federally-funded Leadership Education for Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities grant from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau in the Department of Health and Human Services. 

Clinic Location
The clinics for the Division of Developmental Medicine are located in the Center for Child Development on the 9th Floor of the Doctors' Office Tower, within the Children's Hospital. Patients and families should park in the South parking garage and enter the hospital via the connecting bridge on the second floor. Elevators are available on the second floor adjacent to the Family Resource Center. If you enter through the main doors on the first floor, use the elevators beside the trains to go to the clinic floors. Complimentary valet parking is also available for patients at the front entrance on the first floor.
